The story
Wisconsin
America's Dairyland
Wisconsin is a state of Great Lakes shoreline, dairy farms, forests, rivers, manufacturing cities, small towns, outdoor traditions, and communities shaped by generations of immigrants and Native peoples. Indigenous nations have deep histories throughout the Great Lakes region, and their cultures remain an important part of Wisconsin's identity. Wisconsin became the 30th state in 1848, and farming, timber, mining, shipping, and manufacturing helped build its economy. Dairy farming became especially important, giving Wisconsin its famous identity as America's Dairyland and helping establish traditions surrounding cheese, milk, butter, and other agricultural products. Milwaukee grew into the state's largest city and became known for brewing, manufacturing, food, music, and its Lake Michigan waterfront. Madison developed as the state capital and a major center for education, research, technology, and culture, while Green Bay, Racine, Kenosha, Eau Claire, La Crosse, and other communities developed their own industrial and regional identities. Wisconsin is also famous for its lakes, Northwoods, Door County, fishing, hunting, boating, winter sports, and passionate sports traditions. Wisconsin's story combines agriculture and industry, city neighborhoods and rural communities, old-world food traditions and modern innovation—a distinctly Midwestern way of life built around work, family, community, and the outdoors.
