The story
Washington
The Evergreen State
Washington is a Pacific Northwest state defined by evergreen forests, dramatic mountains, Pacific coastline, fertile valleys, islands, rivers, technology, agriculture, aviation, and international trade. Native peoples have lived throughout the region for thousands of years, developing cultures closely connected to salmon, forests, rivers, and the Pacific Ocean. European and American exploration expanded during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, followed by settlement, logging, fishing, farming, mining, and railroads. Washington became the 42nd state in 1889. Seattle grew into the state's largest city and a major center for shipping, aviation, technology, music, coffee culture, healthcare, and international business. Tacoma developed around its port and industry, Spokane became the major urban center of eastern Washington, and communities throughout the Columbia Basin grew around agriculture and hydroelectric power. Washington is one of America's leading producers of apples, cherries, hops, wine grapes, and other crops. Mount Rainier, Olympic National Park, the Cascade Range, Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, Columbia River Gorge, and Pacific beaches give the state extraordinary natural variety. Washington's story is one of natural resources evolving into innovation—a place where timber towns, farms, ports, aircraft factories, technology companies, music scenes, and outdoor traditions all share the same evergreen landscape.
