The Green Mountain State

Vermont is a state of mountains, forests, farms, covered bridges, historic villages, maple traditions, small towns, and a strong connection to the changing seasons of New England. Native peoples lived throughout the region long before European settlement. Vermont existed for a period as an independent republic before becoming the 14th state in 1791. Farming, timber, quarrying, mills, and small manufacturing businesses shaped much of its early economy. Dairy farming became especially important, while maple syrup production developed into one of Vermont's most recognizable traditions. Montpelier became the state capital, Burlington grew into the largest city and a cultural and economic center on Lake Champlain, and towns throughout the state preserved distinctive village centers and local businesses. Vermont's Green Mountains define much of the landscape and support hiking, skiing, camping, and tourism, while autumn foliage attracts visitors from around the world. The state is also known for craftsmanship, specialty foods, education, outdoor products, and small-scale entrepreneurship. Vermont's story reflects a traditional New England relationship between people and place—family farms, mountain roads, village stores, workshops, forests, and communities where local identity remains closely connected to the land and the seasons.
