The story
Utah
The Beehive State
Utah is a state of dramatic red-rock deserts, snow-covered mountains, salt flats, canyons, growing cities, outdoor recreation, and communities built through persistence and cooperation. Native peoples have lived throughout the region for thousands of years, leaving a deep cultural and historical presence across the landscape. European and American explorers, traders, and settlers later traveled through the area, and large-scale settlement expanded during the mid-1800s. Utah became the 45th state in 1896. Agriculture, mining, railroads, and livestock helped build its early economy, while Salt Lake City grew into the state's largest city and a major transportation, commercial, and cultural center. Mining remained important, particularly copper and other minerals, while technology, finance, healthcare, tourism, aerospace, and outdoor industries later expanded. Utah is famous for its five national parks—Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion—along with the Great Salt Lake, Monument Valley region, Wasatch Mountains, and world-renowned skiing. The beehive became a symbol of industry and cooperation and remains closely associated with the state's identity. Utah's story is about communities building lives in a demanding but spectacular landscape, turning desert valleys and mountain country into one of the fastest-growing regions of the American West.
