The story
Texas
The Lone Star State
Texas is a state of extraordinary scale, where ranch country, major cities, Gulf Coast communities, deserts, forests, farmland, energy fields, technology centers, music, food, and countless local traditions come together under the Lone Star. Native peoples lived throughout the region for thousands of years before Spanish missions and settlements appeared. Texas later became part of Mexico, existed for a period as an independent republic, and joined the United States in 1845. Cattle ranching, farming, railroads, cotton, and oil each shaped major chapters of Texas history. The discovery of oil at Spindletop in 1901 helped transform the state's economy, while Houston grew into an international energy, medical, shipping, and aerospace center. Dallas-Fort Worth became a major business and transportation hub, Austin developed into the state capital and a center for technology and music, and San Antonio preserved centuries of history alongside a growing modern economy. Texas is also closely connected to NASA's Johnson Space Center, the Alamo, barbecue, rodeo, football, ranching, and distinctive regional music. From Big Bend and Hill Country to Gulf beaches, pine forests, plains, and enormous metropolitan skylines, Texas represents independence, ambition, tradition, and opportunity on a scale that has made it one of the most recognizable places in America.
