The story
Tennessee
The Volunteer State
Tennessee is a state of mountains, rivers, music, agriculture, industry, historic communities, and cities whose cultural influence reaches far beyond the state's borders. Native peoples lived throughout the region long before European settlement expanded across the Appalachian frontier. Tennessee became the 16th state in 1796 and developed through farming, river trade, craftsmanship, and transportation. Nashville grew into the state capital and eventually became internationally known as Music City through country music, songwriting, recording, publishing, and live performance. Memphis developed along the Mississippi River and made extraordinary contributions to blues, soul, rock and roll, gospel, and American popular music. Knoxville, Chattanooga, Clarksville, and other communities grew around transportation, manufacturing, education, energy, and commerce. Tennessee's landscapes range from the Great Smoky Mountains and Appalachian valleys in the east to rolling farmland and the Mississippi River in the west. The state is also associated with whiskey making, barbecue, automotive manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, tourism, and outdoor recreation. Tennessee's story is one of sound and movement—mountain songs, river cities, recording studios, highways, factories, farms, and generations of people whose creativity and work have helped shape American culture.
