The story
Oregon
The Beaver State
Oregon is a Pacific Northwest state of rugged coastline, dense forests, volcanic mountains, fertile valleys, rivers, high desert, farms, vineyards, and communities shaped by both outdoor life and creative enterprise. Native peoples lived throughout the region for thousands of years before European and American exploration expanded into the Northwest. During the nineteenth century, thousands of settlers traveled west along the Oregon Trail, making the territory a powerful symbol of America's westward movement. Oregon became the 33rd state in 1859. Timber, fishing, agriculture, shipping, and mining played major roles in its early economy, while Portland grew along the Willamette and Columbia rivers into the state's largest city and an important center for trade, manufacturing, food, design, and technology. The Willamette Valley became known for agriculture and wine production, while coastal communities developed around fishing and tourism. Oregon's natural landmarks include Mount Hood, Crater Lake, Columbia River Gorge, Cannon Beach, waterfalls, forests, and dramatic stretches of Pacific coastline. Modern Oregon is also associated with outdoor recreation, sportswear, technology, craft industries, and environmental appreciation. Oregon's story combines pioneer history with a modern Pacific Northwest identity built around creativity, natural resources, independent communities, and a powerful connection to the landscape.
