The Sooner State

Oklahoma is a state where Native cultures, Great Plains landscapes, ranching, agriculture, energy, music, Route 66, and growing metropolitan communities come together. The region has a complex history deeply connected to Native nations, many of which were forcibly relocated to Indian Territory during the nineteenth century. Today Oklahoma is home to numerous tribal nations whose cultures, governments, businesses, languages, art, and traditions remain central to the state's identity. Oklahoma became the 46th state in 1907. Farming, cattle ranching, and oil discoveries helped drive early economic growth, while Oklahoma City and Tulsa became major centers for energy, transportation, business, culture, and industry. Tulsa's architecture and music history, Oklahoma City's modern growth, and smaller communities throughout the state reflect different chapters of Oklahoma life. The state is also closely associated with Route 66, Western heritage, rodeo traditions, country music, and distinctive regional foods. Oklahoma's landscapes include prairie, forests, mountains, red-earth country, lakes, and wide-open plains. Energy remains important, while aerospace, manufacturing, agriculture, technology, and tribal enterprises have expanded the economy. Oklahoma's story is one of cultures, land, enterprise, music, and resilience—a distinctive American crossroads between the South, Midwest, and West.
