The story
Ohio
The Buckeye State
Ohio has long been a crossroads of American transportation, industry, agriculture, invention, music, sports, and community life, positioned between the Great Lakes, Appalachian region, and Midwest. Native peoples lived throughout the area for thousands of years and left remarkable earthworks that remain part of the state's heritage. Ohio became the 17th state in 1803 and grew rapidly as canals, roads, railroads, and Lake Erie shipping connected its farms and towns to expanding national markets. Cleveland developed into a major industrial and Great Lakes city, Cincinnati grew along the Ohio River, Columbus became the state capital and largest city, and communities such as Toledo, Akron, Dayton, and Youngstown became known for manufacturing and innovation. Ohio played major roles in steel, rubber, automobiles, machinery, glass, aviation, and countless other industries. Dayton is especially connected to aviation through the Wright brothers, while Ohio has produced numerous inventors, entrepreneurs, musicians, athletes, and astronauts. The state also includes fertile farmland, Lake Erie shoreline, wooded hills, river valleys, and historic small towns. Ohio's story is about making, moving, inventing, and building—a place where industrial cities, farms, universities, neighborhoods, sports traditions, and generations of workers have helped shape the American Midwest.
