The story
Nevada
The Silver State
Nevada is a state of desert landscapes, mountain ranges, mining history, entertainment, tourism, ranching, and communities that grew around some of the driest and most dramatic scenery in America. Native peoples lived throughout the Great Basin and surrounding regions long before explorers, miners, ranchers, and settlers arrived. The discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1859 brought enormous attention to the region and helped establish Nevada's reputation for silver mining. Nevada became the 36th state in 1864. Mining remained important, but the twentieth century brought a new era as Las Vegas grew into an internationally recognized destination for resorts, entertainment, conventions, dining, and hospitality. Reno developed as another major tourism and business center, while Carson City remained the state capital. Beyond its famous cities, Nevada contains vast public lands, desert valleys, alpine areas, Lake Tahoe shoreline, historic mining towns, and numerous mountain ranges. Gold mining continues to play an important economic role, while logistics, technology, manufacturing, renewable energy, and other industries have expanded. Nevada's story is one of reinvention—from mining camps and railroad towns to modern cities and tourism centers—set against a rugged Western landscape where open space remains one of the state's defining features.
