The Land of Enchantment

New Mexico is a place where ancient cultures, desert landscapes, mountains, adobe architecture, art, food, science, and centuries of history come together beneath expansive Southwestern skies. Indigenous peoples have lived in the region for thousands of years, and Pueblo communities maintain some of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in what is now the United States. Spanish explorers and settlers arrived beginning in the 1500s, establishing communities and traditions that remain deeply woven into New Mexico's culture. The region later became part of Mexico before joining the United States, and New Mexico became the 47th state in 1912. Santa Fe, founded in the early 1600s, became the state capital and developed into an internationally known center for art, architecture, food, and Southwestern culture. Albuquerque grew into the state's largest city and a center for transportation, technology, healthcare, and business. New Mexico also became important to scientific research and America's aerospace and nuclear history through institutions such as Los Alamos and national laboratories. From White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns to mountains, high desert, Rio Grande communities, pueblos, and historic Route 66, New Mexico's story is one of cultures meeting across centuries and creating a place unlike anywhere else in America.
