The story
New Hampshire
The Granite State
New Hampshire is a classic New England state of mountains, forests, lakes, historic villages, small cities, mills, farms, and a short but beautiful Atlantic coastline. Native peoples lived throughout the region long before European settlements developed during the 1600s. New Hampshire became one of the original thirteen states, and its rivers, forests, and access to the sea supported fishing, shipbuilding, timber, farming, and trade. During the Industrial Revolution, water-powered textile and manufacturing mills transformed communities such as Manchester and Nashua. Concord developed as the state capital, while Portsmouth preserved its maritime character and historic architecture. New Hampshire's White Mountains, including Mount Washington, became major destinations for outdoor recreation, while Lake Winnipesaukee and countless smaller lakes support generations of summer traditions. The state's granite mountains inspired its nickname and helped create an image of strength and independence. Modern industries include manufacturing, technology, healthcare, education, tourism, and professional services. New Hampshire's story is one of New England craftsmanship, local communities, seasonal traditions, outdoor life, and landscapes where covered bridges, town centers, mountain roads, forests, and lakes continue to preserve a strong connection between the past and present.
