The story
Nebraska
The Cornhusker State
Nebraska stretches across the Great Plains, a state of prairie, farmland, ranch country, rivers, sandhills, historic trails, railroads, and communities built around agriculture and transportation. Native peoples lived throughout the region for generations before traders, explorers, pioneers, and settlers traveled west along the Platte River. During the nineteenth century, major routes such as the Oregon, California, and Mormon trails crossed Nebraska, making the region a central corridor in America's westward movement. Nebraska became the 37th state in 1867. Railroads encouraged the growth of towns and helped connect farms and ranches to national markets. Omaha developed into the state's largest city and an important center for transportation, livestock, finance, insurance, and business, while Lincoln became the state capital and a major center for education. Agriculture remains central to Nebraska, particularly corn, cattle, soybeans, and other crops, while food processing, manufacturing, transportation, and financial services contribute to its modern economy. The Sandhills, Platte River, Chimney Rock, open prairie, and migration of sandhill cranes reveal the state's natural side. Nebraska's story reflects the American Great Plains—hard work, agriculture, transportation, family communities, wide horizons, and generations building towns along routes that once carried people toward the West.
