The story
North Dakota
The Peace Garden State
North Dakota is a Great Plains state of open prairie, farmland, ranches, badlands, rivers, energy resources, Native heritage, and communities shaped by long winters and enormous skies. Native nations, including the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Lakota, Dakota, and others, have deep histories throughout the region. European traders and explorers later traveled along the Missouri River, followed by settlers, farmers, ranchers, and railroads. North Dakota became the 39th state in 1889. Wheat, cattle, sunflowers, barley, and other agricultural products became central to the state's economy, while energy production—including oil from the Bakken formation—later transformed parts of western North Dakota. Fargo grew into the state's largest city and a center for business, healthcare, education, and technology, while Bismarck developed as the state capital along the Missouri River. Theodore Roosevelt National Park preserves dramatic badlands where bison, wild horses, and other wildlife roam across rugged terrain. North Dakota's landscape may appear quiet, but its agricultural output, energy resources, transportation networks, and communities play an important role in the northern Plains. Its story is one of resilience, land, agriculture, Native heritage, and generations of people building communities across some of America's widest horizons.
