The story
Montana
The Treasure State
Montana is Big Sky Country, a state of enormous horizons, Rocky Mountain peaks, plains, ranches, rivers, wildlife, historic mining communities, and landscapes that still carry the feeling of the American West. Native nations have deep and enduring histories throughout the region. Explorers, fur traders, miners, ranchers, railroad workers, and settlers later arrived, and discoveries of gold, silver, and copper helped drive economic growth during the 1800s. Montana became the 41st state in 1889. Mining towns such as Butte became nationally important, while cattle ranching, wheat farming, timber, and rail transportation shaped other parts of the state. Helena developed as the capital, while Billings became the state's largest city and an important regional center for commerce, healthcare, energy, and transportation. Montana contains Glacier National Park and portions of Yellowstone National Park, along with countless mountains, valleys, rivers, forests, and open plains. Elk, bison, bears, trout, and other wildlife remain closely associated with the landscape. Tourism and outdoor recreation now complement agriculture, mining, energy, and other industries. Montana's story is one of scale and independence—a place where communities may be separated by great distances but remain connected by ranching traditions, small towns, outdoor life, and some of America's most unforgettable open country.
