The Magnolia State

Mississippi is a state shaped by the great river that carries its name, fertile Delta farmland, Southern traditions, music, literature, agriculture, small towns, forests, and Gulf Coast communities. Native peoples lived throughout the region for thousands of years before European exploration and settlement. Mississippi became the 20th state in 1817, and cotton agriculture played a dominant role in its early economy. The Mississippi Delta later became one of the most influential musical regions in the world as blues musicians developed sounds that would help shape jazz, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, soul, and popular music across generations. Cities such as Jackson, Gulfport, Biloxi, Hattiesburg, Meridian, and Tupelo developed around government, transportation, manufacturing, tourism, education, and commerce. Mississippi's Gulf Coast adds beaches, seafood, fishing, shipbuilding, and maritime traditions to the state's identity, while its interior contains forests, farms, rivers, and historic communities. Mississippi has produced influential writers, musicians, artists, athletes, and craftspeople whose work traveled far beyond the state. Its story is one of creativity growing from community and tradition—a place where food, storytelling, faith traditions, family gatherings, music, and a strong sense of place have helped shape an unmistakable contribution to American culture.
