The North Star State

Minnesota is a land of lakes, forests, farmland, rivers, northern wilderness, thriving cities, and communities shaped by both Scandinavian and other immigrant traditions and deep Native heritage. Dakota and Ojibwe peoples have long histories in the region, and their cultures remain an important part of Minnesota's identity. The state entered the Union in 1858, and agriculture, timber, flour milling, mining, and river transportation helped drive its early economy. Minneapolis grew around the power of Saint Anthony Falls and became one of the world's major flour-milling centers, while neighboring Saint Paul developed as the state capital and an important Mississippi River transportation hub. Northern Minnesota became closely associated with iron mining, while farming dominated much of the southern and western regions. Today the Twin Cities form a major center for business, healthcare, education, arts, technology, food, and professional sports. Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, though it contains even more, and outdoor traditions such as fishing, boating, hiking, hunting, and winter recreation remain central to everyday life. From Lake Superior and the Boundary Waters to prairie farmland and metropolitan neighborhoods, Minnesota represents a distinctive northern American story built around water, work, community, creativity, and enduring connections to the outdoors.
