The story
Maine
The Pine Tree State
Maine is America's northeasternmost state, a place of rocky coastline, working harbors, forests, mountains, lakes, fishing villages, lighthouses, and generations of communities connected to the Atlantic Ocean. Native peoples lived throughout the region long before European fishermen and settlers arrived. Maine was originally part of Massachusetts before becoming the 23rd state in 1820. Fishing, shipbuilding, timber, farming, quarrying, and maritime trade played major roles in its early economy, and Maine-built ships traveled throughout the world. Portland developed into the state's largest city and a major cultural and commercial center, while Bangor became closely associated with the timber industry and Augusta became the capital. Maine is famous for lobster, blueberries, potatoes, maple products, and a long tradition of working from the resources of the land and sea. Acadia National Park, Mount Katahdin, countless lakes, forested wilderness, islands, and scenic coastal roads make outdoor life central to Maine's identity. Its lighthouses have become enduring symbols of the state's maritime heritage. Maine's story is one of independence, craftsmanship, seafaring tradition, natural beauty, and communities that have learned for generations how to live alongside the forests, mountains, cold winters, and powerful Atlantic coastline.
