The Pelican State

Louisiana is one of America's most culturally distinctive states, shaped by the Mississippi River, Gulf Coast, French and Spanish influences, African traditions, Native heritage, Caribbean connections, music, food, wetlands, and generations of communities that created something uniquely their own. Indigenous peoples lived throughout the region long before European exploration. Louisiana became part of a vast French territory before passing through Spanish and French control and eventually becoming part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase. It became the 18th state in 1812. New Orleans developed into an important international port and became famous for architecture, neighborhoods, festivals, cuisine, and music, particularly jazz. Baton Rouge grew as the state capital and industrial center, while Lafayette became closely associated with Cajun culture and Shreveport developed as a regional commercial center. Louisiana's economy has included agriculture, shipping, fishing, seafood, energy, petrochemicals, manufacturing, tourism, and international trade. The state's bayous, swamps, marshes, plantations, forests, and Gulf coastline create landscapes unlike those found elsewhere in America. From gumbo and crawfish to brass bands, zydeco, Mardi Gras traditions, and neighborhood gatherings, Louisiana's story is about cultures meeting, blending, and creating a way of life that has influenced American music, food, and culture far beyond the state's borders.
