The story
Kansas
The Sunflower State
Kansas is a state of open skies, prairie landscapes, wheat fields, cattle country, aviation, small towns, and cities built at the geographic and cultural crossroads of America. Native peoples lived across the Great Plains for generations before explorers, traders, pioneers, and settlers traveled through the region. Kansas became the 34th state in 1861, and its location along westward trails and later railroad routes made it an important part of America's expansion across the continent. Farming and ranching became central to the state's economy, with wheat, corn, sorghum, cattle, and other agricultural products defining much of rural Kansas. Wichita developed into a major center for aircraft manufacturing and became known as the Air Capital of the World, while Kansas City, Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, Dodge City, and other communities developed around industry, education, transportation, agriculture, and trade. Kansas landscapes include the Flint Hills, tallgrass prairie, dramatic rock formations, reservoirs, farmland, and seemingly endless horizons. The sunflower became one of the state's most recognizable symbols, perfectly suited to its bright, expansive countryside. Kansas tells a classic American heartland story of trails, railroads, farms, cattle, aviation, family communities, and generations of people building lives beneath the wide-open skies of the Great Plains.
