The story
Indiana
The Hoosier State
Indiana is a Midwestern state built around agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, sports, small-town traditions, and communities connected by roads, railways, rivers, and industry. Native peoples lived throughout the region long before European settlement expanded into the territory. Indiana became the 19th state in 1816, and farming quickly became central to its economy. Its location between major American markets helped manufacturing and transportation grow, particularly around Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend, Gary, Evansville, and other industrial communities. Indiana became known for automobile manufacturing, steel production, machinery, pharmaceuticals, and other industries, while corn, soybeans, livestock, and other agricultural products remain important. Indianapolis grew into the state capital and became internationally recognized through the Indianapolis 500, one of the world's best-known automobile races. Basketball also became deeply woven into Indiana culture, from neighborhood gyms and high-school rivalries to college and professional teams. The state's landscape ranges from Lake Michigan dunes in the north to rolling farmland, forests, caves, and the Ohio River in the south. Indiana's story reflects the character of the American Midwest—practical, productive, community-centered, and shaped by generations of people building farms, factories, businesses, schools, neighborhoods, and traditions.
