The Hawkeye State

Iowa is a state of fertile farmland, river communities, small towns, growing cities, manufacturing, education, and agricultural traditions that have helped feed the country for generations. Native peoples lived across the region long before European exploration and American settlement. Iowa became the 29th state in 1846, and its rich prairie soil quickly made farming central to the state's identity. Corn, soybeans, pork, cattle, eggs, and other agricultural products helped make Iowa one of America's leading farming states, while food processing, agricultural equipment, manufacturing, insurance, renewable energy, and technology later broadened the economy. Des Moines developed into the capital and largest metropolitan area, while Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Sioux City, Iowa City, Ames, Waterloo, and Council Bluffs became important centers for business, education, industry, and transportation. The Mississippi River defines much of Iowa's eastern border, while the Missouri River shapes the west, creating a state historically connected to trade and movement. Iowa's landscape is often associated with open farmland, but it also includes wooded river valleys, rolling hills, lakes, historic downtowns, and communities with strong local traditions. Iowa's story is closely tied to the land—the farmers, families, businesses, schools, and towns that turned the prairie into one of America's most productive and enduring heartland communities.
