The story
Hawaii
The Aloha State
Hawaii is unlike any other American state, an island chain in the Pacific shaped by volcanic forces, Polynesian heritage, ocean traditions, extraordinary landscapes, and a culture recognized around the world. Polynesian voyagers settled the Hawaiian Islands centuries before European contact, developing sophisticated communities, agriculture, navigation, language, and cultural traditions. The Hawaiian Kingdom was established in the late eighteenth century and became an important Pacific crossroads. Hawaii was later annexed by the United States and became the 50th state in 1959. Sugar and pineapple plantations once played major roles in the economy, attracting workers from many parts of Asia and the Pacific and helping create the multicultural population that characterizes Hawaii today. Honolulu became the state's largest city and its center for government, business, transportation, and tourism. Hawaii's landscapes include active volcanoes, tropical forests, waterfalls, beaches, coral reefs, mountains, and dramatic coastlines spread across islands such as Oahu, Maui, Hawaii Island, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai. Surfing, hula, Hawaiian music, traditional foods, fishing, navigation, and the spirit of aloha remain deeply connected to the islands' identity. Hawaii's story is ultimately about people, ocean, land, tradition, and the unique island cultures that form America's Pacific home.
