The Centennial State

Colorado is defined by mountains, open skies, outdoor adventure, historic mining communities, ranching traditions, and cities that grew where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains. Native peoples lived throughout the region for generations before explorers, traders, miners, ranchers, and settlers arrived in increasing numbers. The discovery of gold in the late 1850s accelerated settlement, creating mining towns and helping Denver grow into the region's major commercial center. Colorado became a state in 1876, one hundred years after the Declaration of Independence, which inspired its nickname, the Centennial State. Mining for gold, silver, coal, and other minerals shaped much of Colorado's early economy, while ranching, farming, railroads, and tourism also became important. Today Denver, Colorado Springs, Boulder, Fort Collins, Pueblo, and mountain communities throughout the state support industries ranging from aerospace and technology to energy, agriculture, tourism, education, and outdoor recreation. Rocky Mountain National Park, Mesa Verde, Pikes Peak, the Garden of the Gods, ski country, alpine lakes, and vast stretches of wilderness attract visitors from around the world. Colorado's story combines frontier history with a modern outdoor lifestyle, preserving the spirit of the West while continuing to build communities around some of America's most spectacular scenery.
