The story
Arizona
The Grand Canyon State
Arizona is a land of dramatic contrasts, where deserts, red-rock formations, pine forests, mountains, canyons, historic communities, and modern cities come together beneath some of America's most recognizable Southwestern skies. Indigenous peoples have lived in the region for thousands of years, and Arizona remains home to numerous tribal nations whose cultures, art, languages, and traditions are essential to the state's identity. Spanish exploration began centuries ago, followed by Mexican governance and eventually American territorial development. Arizona became the 48th state in 1912. Mining, ranching, agriculture, railroads, and trading communities helped build its early economy, while Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, Scottsdale, Flagstaff, and other communities later grew into major centers for business, education, technology, tourism, and culture. Arizona's most famous natural landmark is the Grand Canyon, but the state also includes Monument Valley, the Sonoran Desert, Sedona's red rocks, Saguaro National Park, Petrified Forest, and mountain country that can feel worlds away from the desert below. Copper has long played an important role in Arizona's economy and identity, while aerospace, manufacturing, semiconductor technology, healthcare, and tourism have expanded its modern economy. Arizona tells a uniquely American story of ancient cultures, frontier communities, natural wonder, and cities that continue to grow while surrounded by landscapes unlike almost anywhere else in the country.
