The Heart of Dixie

Alabama is a state shaped by deep history, strong communities, music, agriculture, industry, and a landscape that stretches from the Appalachian foothills to the Gulf Coast. Long before Alabama became a state, the region was home to Native peoples including the Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw, and Chickasaw nations, whose influence remains part of the state's story. Alabama entered the Union in 1819, and agriculture—especially cotton—played a major role in its early development. Over time, cities such as Birmingham grew through iron and steel production, while Mobile developed around its historic port and Montgomery became an important center of commerce and culture. Alabama has also made an enormous contribution to American music, particularly blues, gospel, country, soul, and Southern rock, with Muscle Shoals becoming internationally known for recordings that helped shape generations of popular music. Huntsville added another chapter to Alabama's identity through aerospace, engineering, and America's space program, earning its reputation as the Rocket City. From Gulf Shores and Mobile Bay to Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and the mountains and lakes of northern Alabama, the state brings together tradition and progress in a distinctly Southern way. Alabama's story is one of generations building communities, preserving traditions, creating music, developing new industries, and continuing to add their own chapter to the American journey.
