Alaska
The Last Frontier
Alaska is America's largest state by land area and one of its most extraordinary landscapes, a vast place of mountains, glaciers, forests, tundra, rivers, islands, wildlife, and communities separated by immense distances. Alaska Native peoples have lived throughout the region for thousands of years, developing cultures and traditions closely connected to the land and sea. Russia established settlements in Alaska beginning in the 1700s, and the United States purchased the territory from Russia in 1867. Alaska officially became the 49th state in 1959. Gold discoveries brought waves of newcomers during the late 1800s and early 1900s, while fishing, mining, energy, transportation, tourism, and military activity later became major parts of the economy. Anchorage developed into the state's largest city and transportation center, while Juneau became the capital and Fairbanks grew as an important interior community. Alaska is home to Denali, the highest mountain in North America, along with enormous national parks and some of the country's most recognizable wildlife, including bears, moose, caribou, whales, and bald eagles. Its northern location also creates unforgettable natural sights such as the aurora borealis and the long summer days of the midnight sun. Alaska represents a remarkable part of the American journey—a place where wilderness remains immense, traditions remain strong, and adventure still feels close at hand.
