The story behind the design

Richmond

Where the River, the City, and the Story Meet.

Richmond is a city you can experience in more than one way.

It's the view of the skyline rising above the James River. It's old brick buildings and tree-lined streets. It's neighborhoods filled with restaurants, shops, murals, museums, parks, universities, and businesses. It's a city where you can spend part of your day downtown and, a short time later, find yourself sitting beside the river.

Richmond has history.

But Richmond also has energy.

And somewhere between the two, you discover what makes this Virginia city memorable.

A City Built Along the James

Richmond's story has always been connected to the James River.

The city was established along the river in the 1700s, and its location helped Richmond grow into an important center for transportation, business, manufacturing, and commerce.

Over time, Richmond continued to grow outward from the river, creating the collection of neighborhoods and communities that make up the city today.

And after hundreds of years, the James is still one of Richmond's defining features.

Walk across the bridges.
Explore Belle Isle.
Find a trail along the river.
Watch kayakers take on the rapids.
Sit on the rocks and look back toward downtown.

There aren't many places where you can experience rushing whitewater with a city skyline in the background.

That's Richmond.

Every Neighborhood Has Its Own Personality

One of the best ways to understand Richmond is simply to explore it.

Carytown brings locally owned shops, restaurants, cafés, and the historic Byrd Theatre.

The Fan is known for its tree-lined streets, distinctive architecture, restaurants, and neighborhood atmosphere.

Shockoe Bottom and Shockoe Slip combine cobblestone streets, old buildings, restaurants, businesses, and city life near the river.

Church Hill offers some of Richmond's most recognizable historic architecture and beautiful views of the city.

Jackson Ward has a rich history of business, music, culture, entertainment, and entrepreneurship.

Scott's Addition has transformed into a destination for restaurants, breweries, entertainment, and gathering places.

And that's only the beginning.

Richmond isn't one neighborhood.

It's all of them together.

Art Is Everywhere

Richmond has also developed a personality that's hard to miss.

Murals cover buildings throughout the city.

Galleries and creative spaces give local artists places to share their work.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts brings art from around the world to Richmond, while smaller galleries, studios, festivals, and public artwork keep creativity visible throughout the city.

Sometimes you'll turn a corner and discover an entire wall transformed into artwork.

That's part of the fun of exploring Richmond.

You don't always know what you're going to find.

A City for Food Lovers

Richmond is also a city where eating can become part of the adventure.

Barbecue.
Southern cooking.
Seafood.
Burgers.
Brunch.
International cuisine.
Bakeries.
Coffee shops.
Food trucks.
Fine dining.
Neighborhood restaurants.
And those little places somebody local tells you that you absolutely have to try.

Richmond's food scene reflects the variety of people and neighborhoods that make up the city.

Some restaurants become destinations.

Others simply become your favorite place.

Both become part of the Richmond experience.

There's More Than Downtown

Richmond gives you plenty of reasons to get outside.

The James River Park System stretches through the city with trails, river access, biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking, rafting, and places to simply enjoy the view.

Maymont offers gardens, green spaces, wildlife experiences, and beautiful scenery.

Belle Isle puts nature right beside downtown.

Monroe Park, Byrd Park, and other green spaces give the city places to slow down.

You can explore Richmond without ever feeling like you're doing the same thing twice.

The Richmond You Remember

But the best part of Richmond may not be something you'll find on a list.

Maybe it's the restaurant where you had an unforgettable meal.
The mural you stopped to photograph.
The afternoon you spent beside the James.
The concert you came to see.
The college you attended.
The neighborhood where you lived.
The business you discovered.
The person you came to visit.
The street you remember walking.
Or that view of Richmond that made you stop for a second and take it all in.

Those are the things that turn a destination into a memory.

And that's what MileAmerica is about.

Not simply collecting the names of cities.

Collecting the experiences that happened there.

Maybe Richmond is home.
Maybe you lived here years ago.
Maybe you went to school here.
Maybe you came for work.
Maybe you visited for a weekend.
Maybe Richmond was just one stop on a much longer road trip.

However you found it, once a place becomes part of your journey, its name means something different.

You can look at a Richmond shirt and say:

I've been there.
I know that place.
Richmond is part of my story.

The river.
The neighborhoods.
The food.
The art.
The streets.
The people.
The memories.

That's Richmond.
