The story behind the design
Massachusetts
The Bay State
Massachusetts occupies a central place in the story of New England, with centuries of maritime history, education, manufacturing, literature, innovation, sports, and communities that helped shape American culture. Native peoples lived throughout the region long before English settlements appeared during the early 1600s. Plymouth Colony was established in 1620, followed by settlements around Massachusetts Bay. Massachusetts became one of the original thirteen states, and Boston developed into one of America's oldest and most influential cities. Shipping, fishing, shipbuilding, textiles, and manufacturing powered generations of economic growth, while institutions of higher education helped make the state internationally known for learning and research. Industrial cities such as Lowell and Worcester played major roles in American manufacturing, while communities such as Salem, Plymouth, Gloucester, and New Bedford preserved distinctive maritime histories. Cape Cod, the Berkshires, Boston Harbor, historic villages, beaches, forests, and college towns give Massachusetts remarkable variety within a relatively small area. Today the state is associated with biotechnology, healthcare, education, technology, finance, tourism, and innovation. Massachusetts tells a story of old harbors and new ideas—a place where centuries-old streets, universities, factories, ballparks, fishing ports, and modern laboratories all contribute to the continuing American journey.
