The story behind the design
Idaho
The Gem State
Idaho is a state of mountains, rivers, forests, farmland, open country, and communities shaped by agriculture, mining, outdoor life, and the rugged geography of the American West. Native peoples lived throughout the region for generations before fur traders, explorers, missionaries, miners, ranchers, and settlers traveled into what would become Idaho. Gold discoveries during the 1800s encouraged settlement, while mining communities appeared throughout the mountains. Idaho became the 43rd state in 1890. Agriculture later became one of its defining industries, particularly potatoes, wheat, barley, dairy products, and livestock, while timber and mining remained important in many areas. Boise developed into the state capital and largest city, while Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, Pocatello, and other communities became regional centers. Idaho contains some of America's most impressive wilderness, including the Sawtooth Mountains, Hells Canyon, extensive forests, alpine lakes, rivers, hot springs, and portions of the Snake River Plain. Its nickname, the Gem State, reflects the variety of minerals found there, but it also suits a place whose natural beauty is sometimes less famous than neighboring Western states. Idaho's story is one of land, resources, agriculture, independence, and communities built among some of the West's most expansive scenery.
