The story behind the design
Connecticut
The Constitution State
Connecticut is one of America's oldest states, with a history rooted in coastal communities, colonial settlements, manufacturing, maritime trade, education, and generations of New England craftsmanship. Native peoples lived throughout the region long before European settlements developed during the 1600s. Connecticut became one of the original thirteen states and played an important role in the development of early American government, commerce, and industry. Its rivers and access to Long Island Sound supported shipping and trade, while water-powered mills helped turn Connecticut into an important manufacturing center. The state became known for producing everything from clocks and tools to firearms, machinery, aircraft, and advanced industrial products. Hartford developed as the state capital and a major center for insurance, while New Haven became closely associated with higher education, medicine, culture, and food traditions. Bridgeport, Stamford, New London, Mystic, and communities throughout the state reflect Connecticut's mixture of historic New England towns and modern economic centers. Despite being one of America's smaller states geographically, Connecticut contains coastal villages, wooded hills, farms, historic architecture, and busy metropolitan communities. Its story reflects the craftsmanship, enterprise, education, and community traditions that have helped shape New England for centuries.
